Northern Alaska lodging: Barrow and Kotzebue
Arctic visitors have choices for hotels and restaurants
By Leon Unruh / Alaska.com
Hotels in Barrow and Kotzebue, in Northern Alaska, cater to tour groups, which arrive by plane from Anchorage or Fairbanks.
Barrow: Barrow, the northernmost city on the continent, has several hotels. Among them are the Top of the World, a venerable establishment overlooking the ocean; the Barrow Airport Inn; the King Eider, which caters to birders and was built in 1998; and the Barrow Airport Inn. Expect rooms to run between $115 and $185 a night, although package deals may cut the cost considerably.
Pepe's North of the Border at the Top of the World serves Mexican food. Arctic Pizza serves pizza, steak and seafood. There are a few other restaurants as well, serving a variety of dishes.
Kotzebue: Kotzebue's visitors often stay at the Nullagvik Hotel, operated by the NANA regional corporation. Its rooms run $95 to $145, and tour groups stay here. The Bayside Inn and Restaurant and the Lagoon Bed and Breakfast also take guests.
Kiana: Kiana, east of Kotzebue and west of Kobuk Valley National Park, has the Kiana Lodge. It offers raft trips up the Kobuk River. The lodge may be reached by air taxi or boat from Kotzebue.
Coldfoot: Coldfoot, Mile 175 of the Dalton Highway and the home of the last gas station for northbound travelers until they reach Prudhoe Bay, has two places of accommodation. The Arctic Circle Inn has double rooms for $75 and bunks for $25. The Slate Creek Inn has 80 rooms and an RV campground.
Wiseman: Wiseman, three miles south of the Dalton Highway on a Mile 188 turnoff, has the Arctic Getaway Bed and Breakfast and Boreal Lodging, both near Wiseman Creek.
Prudhoe Bay: Prudhoe Bay, at Mile 414 of the Dalton Highway, has several hotels, including the Arctic Caribou Inn, the Arctic Oilfield Hotel and the Prudhoe Bay Hotel and Restaurant.
When they're available, tours of the Prudhoe Bay site and to the Arctic coast may be arranged through Tour Arctic at the Arctic Caribou.
Kaktovik: This Barter Island village along the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge can be reached from Fairbanks, Prudhoe Bay, Barrow and Nuiqsut. It has two hotels: the Waldo Arms, which has been open since the early 1980s, and Qunuyak Hotel, which was opened in 1998 and is owned by the local Native corporation. Dining is available at both hotels.
