Beat the high cost of an Alaska vacation

Smart shopping, flexibility can save hundreds of dollars on transportation, accommodations

You probably have noticed the line of tiny type at the bottom of the screen during commercials for department stores and fast-food chains, the one saying, "Prices may vary in Alaska and Hawaii."

It's true. They vary upward.

But Alaska can still be done relatively cheaply if you're flexible. If you can avoid the tourist season of June through Labor Day, you'll get lower prices and see a more relaxed state.

Transportation and accommodations often are the most costly items on a travel budget. Together, they can easily surpass $1,000 for a week in the state. But they don't have to for you.

Look for the Alaska that Alaskans see.
