The Kenai Civic League Building was built in 1954 and has been used as city hall, community center, courthouse, church, meeting room, public library, public health nurse office, school room and storage for the first fire truck.
The Kenai Chamber of Commerce is located in Moosemeat John's cabin. John Hedberg was a Nikiski homesteader who hunted moose to feed his 13 children, and was known to share his meat with neighbors.
The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center offers a wealth of information about local businesses and services, as well as a cultural museum and wildlife displays. Alaska movies are shown throughout the day. A free interpretive program is given on some days during the summer months.
The Challenger Learning Center is located next to the Kenai High School, and is Alaska's only space exploration learning center.
Kenai offers a variety of restaurants and gift shops to suit different tastes. If you are seeking a good cup of coffee, check out Charlottes on Willow Street, Coffee Time Espresso near the visitors center, Fireweed Herb Garden, Espresso and Gifts on Forest Drive, and the Espresso Barn on Willow.
Kenai hosts a bluegrass festival in late June, with live music including bluegrass, jazz, Dixieland, rock bands, drinks and food. For more information, call 907-283-8433. The chamber also sponsors annual Fourth of July festivities, including a parade, games, arts and crafts, entertainment and food booths.
Two movie theaters are located in the area, the Kambe in Kenai and Orca Theater on Kalifornsky Beach Road between Kenai and Soldotna.
