Fairbanks' neighbor has mining at heart

The community of Fox, Alaska, lies on the right bank of Fox Creek as it enters Goldstream Creek Valley, 10 miles northeast of Fairbanks.

Fox, with a population of about 300, is located at the junction of the Steese and Elliott highways. Fox is in the Fairbanks North Star Borough.

January temperatures range from minus 22 to minus 2; July temperatures range from 50 to 72. Average annual precipitation is 11.3 inches. Ice fog is common during the winter.

A roadhouse and restaurant provide local employment, and mining-related attractions are nearby. Many residents are employed in Fairbanks or in gold mining.

About 10 percent of the population is Alaska Native or part Native.

History

Fox was established as a mining camp before 1905. The Fox post office operated from 1908 through 1947.
