Alaska's state fairs

Visit all 5 -- Palmer, Haines, Fairbanks, Ninilchik and Kodiak

By far the biggest state in the country, Alaska has state fairs to match. There are five, all during August and September.

Haines
Southeast Alaska State Fair and Bald Eagle Music Festival. Five days in early August. Farm animals, logging activities and a parade. Grounds include buildings used in filming the movie "White Fang."

Fairbanks
Tanana Valley State Fair. Ten days in early August. Alaska's oldest fair. Agricultural exhibits including big vegetables, plus carnival, fireworks, exhibits and music.

Ninilchik
Kenai Peninsula Fair. Third weekend in August. Advertised as "the biggest little fair in Alaska." Rodeo, parade, horse show, livestock and exhibits.

Palmer
Alaska State Fair. Eleven days ending on Labor Day. Giant vegetables (cabbages sometimes weigh more than 100 pounds) from Southcentral Alaska's agricultural hot spot, concerts, 4-H exhibits, arts and crafts.

Kodiak
Kodiak State Fair and Rodeo. Three days ending on Labor Day. Junior and main event rodeos, rodeo queen contest, exhibits and contests in the realm of pie eating and watermelon seed spitting.
