Anchorage is not served by the Alaska Marine Highway System, but it is occasionally visited by cruise liners.

The city's port is generally busy with container ships, although the construction of more docks has been proposed.

The closest ferry ports are Whittier (63 miles south of downtown Anchorage) and Seward (127 miles). Bus and rail service is available to both locations.

Whittier and Seward are destination ports close to Anchorage. From there, passengers are delivered to Anchorage by train or bus.

A handful of liners call in Anchorage each year.

Whittier

The ferry Bartlett serves Prince William Sound, connecting Whittier, Valdez, Cordova, Chenega Bay and Tatitek.

Seward

The ferry Tustumena connects Seward in the summer with Valdez, Kodiak, Port Lions, Seldovia, Homer. Once a month the Tusty sails west as far as Unalaska/Dutch Harbor.

Once a month from April through October, the ferry system sails across the Gulf of Alaska, connecting both Seward and Valdez with the Inside Passage city of Juneau. In Juneau, passengers connect with other ferries moving up and down the Inside Passage.
