Ptarmigan in Alaska

State bird changes colors to match the season

Alaska.com
Where to find: Willow ptarmigan are found nearly everywhere in Alaska’s high, treeless country -- and sometimes they're also found in the willows and alders near the tree line.

At Denali National Park, bus passengers sometimes see them along the road, often in a fox's mouth.

Tips: Ptarmigan are the size of large doves. Their most famous feature is the ability to use camouflage, turning white in the winter and brown in the summer.

Alaskans may shoot or snare the willow ptarmigan, Alaska's state bird. Depending on the location, the daily bag limit varies from 10 to 50.
