Bison

A wood bison calf rests with female adults at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in May. The center says the calf, born that month, is the first to be born in the state since they became extinct from Alaska in the late 1800s. There could be as many as five other wood bison cows that are pregnant as well. Though plains bison were transplanted to the Delta Junction area in the 1920s, there are no wood bison in the wild in Alaska.
