Alaskans drive the same cars and trucks that anyone else in the United States does: Fords, Chevrolets, Subarus, Hondas and so forth. Pickups and SUVs sell well.

Four-wheel drive is not required for most roads in winter, although many drivers like to have it available.

Of course, Alaska is not Alabama. There are fewer convertibles in Alaska, and the motorcycle season doesn't last as long. Alaska allows studded tires during the months when icy roads are likely. In Anchorage, that's mid-September through April. Many urban Alaskans have two sets of tires, switching out twice each year in the driveway or at a shop.

Highways are reliably cleared during and after snowstorms. Some city streets may go several days before the grader or bladed truck comes past, but that doesn't stop people from driving.

Alaskans accept the fact that in winter, it snows and life goes on.
