Alaska has 626,932 residents, according to the 2000 census, making it the 48th most populous state. The 2001 estimate, however, showed Alaska in 47th position, surpassing North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming. It's also larger than Washington, D.C.
The 2000 census shows these stats for Alaska's largest populated areas:
• The Municipality of Anchorage (Anchorage itself, plus Chugiak, Eagle River, Eklutna and Girdwood) has 260,283 residents, or 42 percent of the state's population.
• The Fairbanks North Star Borough has 82,840 residents, including about 30,000 in Fairbanks itself.
• The Matanuska-Susitna Borough (including Palmer and Wasilla, north of Anchorage) has 59,322 residents.
• The Kenai Peninsula Borough (including Homer, Kenai and Seward) has 49,691 residents.
• The City and Borough of Juneau has 30,711 residents.
