What is subsistence?

"Subsistence" could be described as "living off the land and sea," as Alaska Natives did entirely for millennia.

Many Natives and some more recent arrivals to rural Alaska still count to varying degrees on hunting, fishing and gathering.

State politics has dwelled recently on whether rural Alaskans should have greater priority in hunting and fishing.
