Outdoor Life names Kodiak 4th best for sportsmen

What's better, bagging a giant king salmon or a kokanee, the landlocked red salmon that rarely exceeds 14 inches? A Kodiak brown bear more than 1,000 pounds or a chukar, a small game bird in the pheasant family? Outdoor Life magazine, apparently, prefers modest species gathered in pleasant weather.

Buoyed by a snowy winter, Alyeska Resort on Monday announced its ski season will extend through May.

Alyeska will operate its tram and Chair 6 each Friday, Saturday and Sunday during May if the weather cooperates.

Skiers can expect plenty of corn snow. The base at the top of the mountain still exceeds 200 inches, with total snowfall this season at 821 inches.

Ski passes will be discounted, too, with adult day passes costing $40. The tram will operate 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Alyeska's Spring Carnival begins on Friday, with the popular Slush Cup late Saturday afternoon.
