The federal and state homesteading programs are closed. Gone are the days of claiming a piece of government-owned land and "buying" it with sweat equity.

People who want a piece of Last Frontier real estate now generally have to buy it privately or from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources in its scheduled land sales.
