Airline and ferry system are the capital's main means of travel

Juneau has no road linking it to the outside world, so all travel is done by boat and by plane.

Alaska Airlines provides several flights a day from Juneau International Airport to Seattle, Anchorage and other Alaska towns. Panhandle-based airlines such as L.A.B. Flying Service and Alaska Seaplane Service, among others, provide scheduled and charter service in the area.

Juneau is 900 miles from Seattle and about 575 from Anchorage.

Juneau has a seaplane landing area at the airport and another at the harbor, down among the cruise liners.

The Alaska Marine Highway System calls at the Auke Bay dock several times a week.

A ferry ride from Juneau to Sitka is over in almost nine hours, and from Juneau to Haines, it's 4.5 hours. For a voyage from Petersburg to Juneau, set aside about 8 hours.

Passengers must check in a couple of hours before the sailing.

For smaller craft, there are five small boat harbors.

Cars may be rented in town. There are taxis and municipal bus service as well.
