Campgrounds, cabins and shelters are maintained by the Forest Service and Alaska State Parks department throughout Southeast Alaska.
Here is a list of what each locality offers visitors who carry tents, drive RVs or want a cabin.
Juneau
In town, campers can stay on undeveloped city land a quarter-mile off the road for up to four days. Call 907-586-8800 or 907-586-8751. Juneau Parks and Recreation: 586-5226.
RVs can set up camp in Auke Bay RV Park. Mendenhall Lake campground is for RVs and tents, but the park will be closed much of summer 2004 for road repairs. Also, there is free overnight parking at Savikko Park/Sandy Beach and at Spruce Meadow RV Park.
The Forest Service has campgrounds at Mendenhall Lake and Auke Village.
There are also Forest Service has cabins in the area.
Admiralty Island
The Forest Service maintains a dozen public-use cabins on Admiralty Island.
Ketchikan
Ketchikan has three Forest Service campgrounds, a state campground and a private resort.
There are also about 30 Forest Service cabins and a dozen shelters near Ketchikan and in Misty Fjords National Monument.
Prince of Wales Island
The Forest Service maintains two undeveloped campgrounds, plus undeveloped campsites around the island, the third largest in the United States. Craig has RV parks and public showers. Klawock has an RV campground.
There are also Forest Service cabins in the area.
Wrangell
The Wrangell city park has tent camping, and there is an RV park on Berger Street. There are a campground at Shoemaker Bay and a couple of Forest Service campgrounds nearby. There are also several Forest Service cabins in the area.
Petersburg
Tent camping is allowed downtown in Petersburg, and there is also a public campground south of town on the Mitkoff Highway. The Ohmer campground, operated by the Forest Service, is 22 miles south of town on the Mitkof Highway.

Sitka
Sitka has Starrigavan and Sawmill Creek campgrounds. There is an RV park north of town, plus a Sealing Cove campground on Japonski Island. There are numerous Forest Service cabins and shelters as well.
Hoonah
Chichagof Island has several Forest Service cabins.
Gustavus
Glacier Bay National Park has a campground.
Yakutat
The Forest Service maintains cabins in the Tongass National Forest, but reaching them can be a problem. Some trails may be under standing water.
Haines
Haines, the main connection between the ferry system and the road system, caters to RV campers. Portage Cove State Recreation Site, near Fort Seward, is for walk-in campers only. Chilkat State Park has RV and tent sites, eight miles from town on Mud Bay Road. Chilkoot Lake campground is 10 miles from Haines on Lutak Road, six miles past the ferry. Mosquito Lake State Recreation Site is three miles down Mosquito Lake Road.
Skagway
Skagway has private campgrounds and RV parks. There is a campground near Dyea at the head of the Chilkoot Trail. The Forest Service maintains a couple of public-use cabins nearby.
